History was rewritten at the Renouf Tennis Centre on Saturday night, as Island Bay produced a stunning upset to claim the Jack Taylor Shield in emphatic fashion.
L-R: Alex Calder, Tom Bolton, George Lyons, Magnus Munkacsi and Henri Lyons
Heading into the grand finals, Thorndon’s men were widely tipped to take home the title. But tennis has a way of defying expectations and Island Bay arrived ready to rewrite the script.
From the outset, it was clear this would not follow the predicted path. A depleted Thorndon side, struggling under the weight of key injuries, found themselves immediately under pressure from an Island Bay team brimming with confidence and intent.
Sensing their moment, Island Bay wasted no time asserting dominance. Alex Calder, George Lyons, and Magnus Munkacsi delivered a ruthless opening statement, powering through their singles matches with clinical efficiency. In what felt like a blink of an eye, Island Bay had surged to the brink of victory, leaving Thorndon reeling.
But the defining moment of the night belonged to Island Bay’s No. 2, Tom Bolton.
After dropping the opening set, Bolton could have faltered. What followed was a composed and commanding response. In front of a packed and buzzing Renouf Tennis Centre crowd, Bolton claimed a memorable three-set victory.
Before a single doubles point was played, the Jack Taylor Shield was already Island Bay’s.
Yet the team wasn’t finished. Carrying their momentum into the doubles, Island Bay completed a flawless performance, sweeping both matches to secure a remarkable 8–0 victory.
And with it, we, Island Bay ended a 52-year wait, etching our names into club history with one of the most memorable triumphs the competition has seen.
